Ready-to-use acrylic microcement and two-component epoxy microcement can both create attractive, continuous decorative finishes. However, they behave differently during application and hardening.
Ready-to-use microcement offers simpler application and a more forgiving working process. The 2K epoxy option provides a harder, stronger finish, but requires closer control of mixing, working time and sanding.
Choosing the right system means considering the surface, intended use and experience of the installer.
What is ready-to-use microcement?
ROQEN ready-to-use microcement is an acrylic-based decorative coating supplied premixed. There is no separate hardener to add before application.
It dries and develops strength as moisture leaves the applied material in contact with the surrounding air. Temperature, humidity, ventilation, substrate conditions and coat thickness all affect this process.
It is more accurate to describe this as air drying, rather than a chemical reaction with oxygen.
Thin layers are essential
Ready-to-use microcement should be applied in thin, controlled layers appropriate to the selected grade.
Applying extra material in one thick coat does not make the surface stronger. A thick layer may feel dry on top while remaining softer underneath because moisture has not escaped fully.
Correctly applied thin coats allow more even drying and help the material develop its intended hardness and strength. Build the finish through the specified coat sequence, allowing each layer to dry sufficiently before continuing.
The aim is the recommended thickness—not the thinnest coat possible and not one heavy application.
A more forgiving working process
Because there is no hardener to activate, ready-to-use microcement does not have the same mixed-batch pot-life countdown as a two-component epoxy product.
This gives the installer more flexibility when working around corners, details and smaller sections. However, material already spread on the surface will still dry, and hot conditions or strong airflow can shorten the time available for finishing.
Keep the container covered between uses and follow the product’s storage instructions.
Convenient for walls and vertical surfaces
Ready-to-use microcement is particularly convenient for decorative walls and vertical details. Thin coats are easier to control with a trowel and reduce the need to handle a heavy build-up of wet material.
For installers developing their finishing technique, the simpler preparation and more forgiving working process can make this range easier to manage.
What is 2K epoxy microcement?
ROQEN 2K microcement is an epoxy-based, two-component system. The microcement and its separate hardener must be combined in the specified proportions before application.
Once mixed, a chemical curing reaction begins. This gives the material a limited usable working period, known as its pot life.
ROQEN’s pack contains 5 kg of microcement plus a separate 500 g tub of hardener. Always follow the current mixing instructions and mix thoroughly.
Higher strength and hardness
Within the ROQEN range, the 2K epoxy system is the higher-strength option for projects where a harder, more robust surface is a priority.
That additional hardness also changes how the material is worked and finished. It requires an organised application process and suitable equipment.
A stronger coating still needs a sound substrate. It cannot correct movement, loose tiles or inadequate preparation beneath it.
Shorter working time after mixing
Once hardener is added, the available working time is limited. Plan the application area, tools and mixing sequence before starting.
Mix only the quantity that can be applied within the specified pot life. Temperature affects the curing process, so working time should always be checked against the current technical guidance.
Do not assume mixed material remains usable simply because it still appears workable.
Greater scope for thicker application
Compared with the ready-to-use acrylic range, the 2K system allows greater coat build where the selected grade and specification permit it.
This does not mean it can be applied at any thickness. Follow the approved coat limits and system build-up. Significant unevenness or defects should be addressed during preparation rather than hidden beneath excessive microcement.
More demanding sanding
The cured epoxy surface is harder to abrade. Ordinary low-quality sandpaper may cut poorly, wear out quickly or produce an inconsistent finish.
For ROQEN 2K microcement, plan to use specialist diamond abrasive pads or high-quality sanding discs suitable for hard resin coatings, according to the required finish and application guidance.
The abrasive type, grit and sanding stage matter. Diamond grinding and decorative polishing serve different purposes, so select the correct tool for the task.
A quick comparison
| Consideration | Ready-to-use acrylic | 2K epoxy |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation | Premixed; no separate hardener | Microcement and hardener must be mixed |
| Hardening | Air drying as moisture leaves | Chemical curing after mixing |
| Working process | More forgiving | Limited pot life after mixing |
| Coat thickness | Thin, controlled layers are crucial | Greater build where specified |
| Vertical application | Convenient and easy to control in thin coats | Requires careful technique and planning |
| Strength | Depends on correct drying and system application | Higher-strength option within the ROQEN range |
| Sanding | Generally easier to abrade | Suitable premium abrasives or diamond pads |
Which should you choose?
Choose ready-to-use microcement when straightforward preparation, manageable application and decorative wall finishes are priorities.
Consider 2K epoxy microcement when higher strength and hardness are priorities and the installer has the equipment and experience to manage mixing, pot life and finishing.
Both ranges include Base, Medium and Fine grades. These grades have different roles within the system; they should be selected as part of the complete application build-up.
Both also require suitable preparation, compatible primers and the specified protective finish. Neither should be treated as a shortcut around substrate repairs or wet-area waterproofing requirements.
